Born and raised in Mason City, Iowa, Robert Meredith Willson enjoyed a remarkable career as a musician, composer, conductor, arranger, author, and radio personality. As a young boy in Mason City, he displayed exceptional musical talent, which led him to study in New York City after graduating from Mason City High School. His early career included performing with John Philip Sousa and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. After serving in the Army, Willson transitioned to work in radio and television, often making concert appearances with his wife, Rini, a celebrated star in opera, radio, and concert performance.
Willson’s most enduring legacy is his Tony Award-winning Broadway musical The Music Man, for which he wrote the book, lyrics, and music. The musical, inspired by his hometown, brought Mason City to life as the fictitious “River City.” The Music Man became one of Broadway’s longest-running hits and received numerous prestigious awards. The show’s success led to revivals on stage and screen, including a Walt Disney film starring Matthew Broderick and Kristin Chenoweth. The Beatles even covered the show’s hit song, “Till There Was You.”
Beyond The Music Man, Willson composed symphonies, popular songs, and other musicals, including The Unsinkable Molly Brown and Here’s Love. His holiday classic, “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas,” continues to charm audiences worldwide, along with beloved songs like “May the Good Lord Bless and Keep You.”
Mason City proudly honors Willson’s legacy at the annual North Iowa Band Festival, and visitors can explore his life and achievements at The Music Man Square and his boyhood home. Though celebrated globally for his melodies, Meredith Willson will always be remembered in Mason City as the original Music Man of River City.
